MAP Research on male victims of domestic abuse in Northern Ireland launched October 19, 2010

Posted by admin in : General Information , add a comment

In September 2010 MAP launched a research report by Daryl Sweet on male victims of domestic violence and abuse in Northern Ireland. The research launch took place at the Pump-House in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter and was attended by a variety of policy makers, practitioners and stakeholders.

This important research is one of the first pieces in Northern Ireland and provides evidence of the needs and experience of male victims of domestic violence and abuse in Northern Ireland. It also presents evidence of the awareness of and attitudes towards these men, reviews current services and makes recommendations for change.

Extract from the BBC News Website

“There’s a widespread belief that it’s mainly women who are the victims of violence in the home, but a study suggests that as many as 40% of victims are men.

The group Parity, which campaigns for men’s rights, says that male victims are often ignored by police and there are only a handful of refuge places for abused men across the UK.

Ian McNicholl, who was abused by a partner, and Mark Brooks from the Mankind Initiative spoke to BBC Breakfast.”

Headline: School lessons to tackle domestic violence outlined November 27, 2009

“Every school pupil in England is to be taught that domestic violence against women and girls is unacceptable, as part of a new government strategy.” – According to the BBC website this week.

We think that this is definitely a step in the right direction, however we don’t think there should be a distinction made between genders.

Men are victims also and we feel the focus must be on promoting healthy relationships and the skills involved, rather than simply a focus on ending violence against women.
